How Highway is Fighting Phone Fraud in Logistics

Highway recently hosted a webinar featuring insights from Bo Carlton, SVP of Customer Success and Will Van de Kamp, SVP of Product and Partnerships, on how Highway is leading the fight against phone fraud in the logistics industry through innovative carrier identity verification.

The Growing Fraud Challenge in Logistics

“Fraud has long been a major issue in the logistics space, costing brokers and carriers time and money,” said Bo Carlton. “At Highway, we recognized early on that a more secure, efficient verification process was needed to protect the industry.”

Will Van de Kamp added, “Many fraudsters exploit outdated verification systems, creating fake carrier identities or misrepresenting themselves. Our goal has always been to close those loopholes.”

A Comprehensive Defense

During the webinar, Bo and Will highlighted Highway’s approach to carrier verification when it comes to phone fraud prevention. They discussed the rise of phone spoofing, a technique fraudsters use to impersonate carriers and gain access to sensitive freight information..

In a recent data analysis, 138,000 inbound calls across 10 customers revealed 4,758 calls flagged for fraud. Van de Kamp emphasized the importance of real-time fraud protection, stating that Highway's solutions are designed to be "really fast," helping brokers detect and block fraudulent interactions before they escalate.

“Our goal is to stop fraud where it starts—on the phone,” Will said. “Highway’s VoIP tool integrates seamlessly into phone systems, working behind the scenes to verify identities and prevent fraud in real time.”

The webinar also highlighted how Highway’s network effect plays a crucial role: when a fraudulent actor is identified, the information is immediately shared across the Highway network to protect other brokers from similar attacks.

Bo and Will emphasized the importance of integrating fraud prevention tools across all communication channels, including email and phone systems to provide comprehensive protection for brokers.

Staying Ahead of Emerging Threats

As the logistics landscape continues to evolve, Highway remains committed to staying ahead of emerging threats and ensuring that brokers have the tools they need to operate safely and efficiently.
