Routes a Truck Can Actually Run: Highway Integrates Google's Large Vehicle Routing

Business Challenge

Highway is the leading provider of Carrier Identity® solutions for freight brokers, empowering them to reduce fraud and streamline the digital booking process. To enhance our core platform, we set out to give brokers real-time visibility, route overviews, and accurate ETAs from pickup to delivery, built on truck-safe, compliant routes. 

Trucks cannot take the routes cars do. When Google released Large Vehicle Routing (LVR), we moved early to build it into our core platform, so every route we calculate is one a carrier can safely and legally run and every ETA reflects that reality. To execute, we turned to Woolpert, a strategic Google Maps Platform partner with deep expertise in location-based logistics. Together, we optimized our mapping architecture to make LVR viable at scale — transitioning from high-tier Google Maps Platform SKUs, such as the Place Details API (Enterprise), to improve location precision for commercial vehicles while reducing cost per call.

  • Enhanced Customer Value: To give freight brokers truck-safe, compliant routing, dependable ETAs, and a stronger track-and-trace offering, we brought Google’s newly released Large Vehicle Routing capabilities into our platform. 
  • Cost Optimization & Predictability: To make large-scale vehicle routing economically viable, we transitioned from high-tier legacy SKUs (such as Place Details) to the newly released Search Destinations endpoint of the lower-cost Geocoding API, significantly reducing unit costs.

The Solution

Routing and ETAs in Highway are now powered by Google. Woolpert began by auditing our API usage, identifying opportunities to reduce costs and improve location data — work that prepared us to adopt Google’s newly released Large Vehicle Routing dataset and brought Highway, Woolpert, and Google together around our track-and-trace offering. Building on our existing use of Google’s Address Validation API, now paired with the Search Destinations endpoint, we cleanse shipping and receiving data the moment it enters the platform, then route every load the way a truck actually moves: legal roads, real constraints, precise commercial locations.

This architecture keeps every load accounted for: accurate truck routes, continuously updated ETAs, and automated service failure notifications when something slips. With this release, freight brokers using Load Lock +, our track-and-trace platform, now see those ETAs directly in their workflow — the clarity to keep shippers informed, get ahead of delays, and protect service on every load. Carriers benefit too: every route is planned for a truck from the start, matched to their equipment and the roads they are permitted to drive. By pairing Google’s location intelligence with Woolpert’s optimization guidance, we deliver that visibility on a secure, cost-efficient foundation.
