Carrier Spotlight

How Stateline Specialized Transporters Protects Their Legacy Of Trust

Specialized freight leaves little room for guesswork.

Every load is unique, and every product requires careful handling. Customers expect the carrier moving their freight to understand exactly what's on the trailer before the wheels ever start turning. That’s where experienced drivers matter most.

For more than 20 years, Stateline Specialized Transporters has built its business around detailed product knowledge, strong customer relationships, and ensuring jobs are done right the first time. This Iowa-based carrier run by Mark Heggestad operates three trucks across the United States and Canada, hauling specialized step-deck freight while continuing to build long-term relationships with brokers and customers.

For Mark, that trust has always been the foundation of the business.

Building Relationships Through Expertise

Specialized freight demands more than moving cargo.

It requires a unique understanding of the products being hauled and the customers receiving them.

Stateline specializes in hauling aluminum utility trailers used for everything from golf carts and snowmobiles to side-by-sides and recreational equipment. Mark’s job involves more than driving freight and unloading a trailer. Mark and his team often help dealerships assemble the product, install wheels and tires, and prepare it for the customer.

That hands-on experience gives Stateline deep product knowledge.

Mark can identify trailer models, explain how they're built, discuss warranty information, and recognize design changes almost immediately. That expertise gives customers confidence that the people hauling their products understand them just as well as the people who designed them.

Trust Looks Different Today

Building relationships has always been part of trucking and protecting those relationships has become just as important.

Like many carriers, Stateline has seen freight fraud become a growing challenge. Mark described one situation where a broker reposted a load using Stateline's identity after the original shipment disappeared. In another incident, someone attempted to fraudulently book more than 20 loads using the company's MC number.

For a small carrier, identity theft is more than a frustrating hurdle.

Any instance of fraud has the potential to disrupt operations, damage relationships, and create significant financial risk.

Highway helped identify the unauthorized activity before additional loads moved, giving Stateline time to respond.

Why Verification is Worth It

The industry's response to fraud has changed how carriers work.

Identity verification, shipment tracking, photos, documentation, and load monitoring all require more time than they did just a few years ago.

But after seeing firsthand how easily bad actors can exploit the industry, he views those extra steps differently.

"If it's going to protect me, I'm going to do what protects me."

For Stateline, verification isn't unnecessary friction.

It's part of protecting the business they've spent more than two decades building.

Technology Should Work Together

Technology has become an essential part of modern trucking.

Stateline uses electronic logging devices, shipment tracking, and digital verification tools throughout its operation. Those systems improve visibility for brokers while helping the company stay connected throughout every shipment. As Mark put it,

"You have to accept, adapt, and embrace the technology that's out there."

Experience Still Sets Carriers Apart

After more than 20 years in business, Mark has watched trucking and its technology change dramatically.

Fraud has become more sophisticated and, as a result, identity verification has become part of everyday operations.

But the qualities that build lasting customer relationships haven't changed.

Highway reinforces that approach by helping carriers verify their identity, strengthen broker confidence, and protect themselves against increasingly sophisticated fraud. For Stateline, those protections help preserve something that's taken decades to earn: trust.
