6 Common Questions About Highway (Explained)

Carriers ask us a lot of the same questions about Highway—and that’s a good thing. Here are clear, straightforward answers to the six questions we hear most, so you know exactly how Highway works for Carriers and what to expect. Let’s dive in.

Question #1: “Highway’s ELD connection feels intrusive. How is Highway using my ELD connection?”

Answer: Highway uses ELD data for verification, not surveillance.

Connecting an ELD to Highway does not mean that Highway is “tracking everything” or watching your every move.

Highway uses ELD connectivity for specific purposes:

  • To confirm the presence of active and operational vehicles to establish credibility.
  • To verify that the truck assigned to a contracted load is insured and is moving towards the origin.
  • To track a vehicle’s location only while you’re on a contracted load for one of its customers using track and trace services.

What Highway does not do:

  • Highway is not tracking all of your trucks all of the time.
  • Highway is not tracking you while you are off duty or at home.
  • Highway does not store or share any HOS or driver-related information.
  • Highway team members do not access your ELD account.

Question #2: “Is Highway mining ELD data to start their own brokerage or to give it to brokers to ultimately undercut rates?”

Answer: Highway does not sell, share, or mine ELD data for brokerage activity.

The reality:

  • Highway is not a brokerage and has no interest in becoming a brokerage.
  • Highway does not sell ELD data.
  • Highway does not share raw location or any other ELD data with any other party externally.
  • Highway does not store, share or sell HOS data, driver behavior data, or anything related to how you run your operation.

ELD connectivity exists to establish credibility and legitimacy, not to extract value from your operations.

Question #3: “It feels like Highway makes the rules. Where does the broker come in?”

Answer: Brokers make their own decisions—Highway provides verified information.

This is an important distinction to understand.

A simple way to think about it: Highway is the accountant. We keep accurate records—but we don’t make the call. They keep the records. They don’t make the call.

Highway presents verified information in a structured way so brokers can make their own risk decisions. Every broker sets their own standards—and they can override them whenever they choose.

Highway does not:

  • Decide pass/fail outcomes
  • Force brokers to work—or not work—with anyone

Unlike other platforms, Highway doesn’t grade carriers. Highway provides transparency.

The decision stays with the broker.

Question #4: “Is Highway against owner-operators and small carriers?”

Answer: Highway exists to protect legitimate carriers—especially smaller ones.

The truth is, when fraud goes unchecked, legitimate carriers—especially smaller ones—are the first to feel it.

When fraud floods the market:

  • Rates get pushed down
  • Trust disappears
  • Legitimate carriers lose out

By working to reduce fraud, Highway helps ensure that hardworking, trustworthy carriers are the ones brokers see and select.

What Highway actually does:

  • Verifies real people and real businesses
  • Prevents access for fraudulent actors
  • Shines a light on carriers who are doing things the right way

Highway’s goal is to create better market conditions, more consistent opportunities, and a more secure ecosystem for everyone. If you feel that you have been unfairly represented, please reach out to carrieridentity@highway.com.

Question #5: “Is Highway just a platform for brokers? There’s fraud everywhere; what’s in it for me?”

Answer: No! Highway gives carriers tools too—including fraud reporting.

Highway isn’t just about broker visibility. Fraud affects everyone. The more visibility the industry has, the harder it becomes for fraud to survive.

Highway for Carriers was built so that motor carriers can:

  • Search and verify any broker by name, MC, or DOT number
  • Confirm broker authority, activity, and credit standing
  • Identify potential fraud risks, including double brokering and identity theft
  • Access broker contact details, including rate confirmation and invoicing info
  • Review a broker’s size, affiliations, and history
  • Streamline onboarding with verified brokers

And the best part, its free!

Question #6: “I’m on the road. How could Highway be easier to use from my phone?”

Answer: Highway works on the web—and now on mobile.

Highway built a mobile app just for carriers. Highway can be accessed on desktop or mobile—whether you’re in the office or on the road. To access Highway for Carriers visit highway.com/onboarding/carrier or download the Highway for Carriers App on the Apple Store or Google Play Store.
